Facing the most challenging year in collegiate sports history
From individual athletes to entire sports leagues, the sports industry was significantly impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic and the public health restrictions implemented to slow its spread.
Sporting events of all sizes, from the Olympics to local little league games, were modified or cancelled. There isn’t one level of sports that wasn’t affected and the full impact on athletes won’t be known for months and even years to come.
For the college athlete this time was devastating. Competing at the collegiate level is often the pinnacle of an athlete’s career and it’s a time they can never get back.
Champions are made in times of adversity
At Belmont Abbey College we understood this and that’s why we did everything we could to ensure all of our Crusaders (student athletes) could compete safely. The college took every precaution possible to ensure we could open safely in-person and operate as close to normal as possible. When all of the division rules were in flux, the coaches kept up practices, created inner-squad competitions, and performed the required covid-testing of the Crusaders weekly. The Crusaders knew what was at stake as they saw their friends at other colleges missing out on the experience and they worked together to safeguard the health of their fellow teammates. It was this dedication to the value of community, sports, and the individual players, that lead to the Crusaders success in the Spring.
Meet the Belmont Abbey Men’s Lacrosse Team
One team, in particular, came together during this challenging time and beat all the odds. The Belmont Abbey Men’s Lacrosse team earned a 12-7 victory over top-seeded Mount Olive to win the Conference Carolinas Championship.
This team spent hours practicing, doing two-a-days on the field that they had to share with several other Abbey sports teams. Through all of this hard work, teammates grew together and strengthened each others skills resulting in ten Belmont Abbey Men’s Lacrosse players being named All-Conference Carolinas. Belmont Abbey’s ten are the most All-Conference honors received in the league.
To celebrate this victory, we are raising support to award the players with championship rings. By wearing their championship ring, the Men’s Lacrosse players will be reminded what they learned on and off the field and what it takes to overcome adversity.
Belmont Abbey College: Where sports and virtue come together
At Belmont Abbey College, world-class performance and glorifying God go-hand-in-hand.
We believe that athletic performance can only be perfected by addressing and developing the whole person in mind, body, and soul.
By supporting the Belmont Abbey Men’s Lacrosse team, you are training the next generation of virtuous leaders through sports.
Your gift helps our student athletes to “Raise the Red!” both in and out of the classroom as our Belmont Crusaders bring their skills and virtues to the workforce and society at large.
