CaroMont Health will partner with several other medical groups specializing in orthopedics and spines to bring an outpatient surgery center to Belmont.

The Belmont Surgery Center will open in mid-2023 on the campus of the CaroMont Regional Medical Center-Belmont, now under construction, according to CaroMont Health. The new hospital will open in late 2023. CaroMont Health will partner with Carolina Orthopaedic & Sports Medicine Center and OrthoCarolina and Neuroscience & Spine Center of the Carolinas to open the ambulatory surgery center.

The outpatient surgery center will occupy 14,000 square feet on the first floor of a medical office building that lies adjacent to the 54-bed, $195 million hospital now under construction off I-85 and adjacent to Belmont Abbey College.

Belmont Surgery Center will have two operating suites and two procedure rooms, and will primarily offer musculoskeletal outpatient surgery, including orthopedic and sports medicine, neurospine, full and partial joint replacement, and pain management procedures, according to CaroMont Health.

This partnership will create the first joint venture surgery center in Gaston County, although the four partners have worked side-by-side for more than two decades. CaroMont Health expects this collaboration to support expansion into the eastern Gaston, western Mecklenburg region.

“Belmont Surgery Center will be an incredible, state-of-the-art facility, but the expertise of the surgeons, providers and staff who work there will make this project truly exceptional,” said Dr. Todd Davis, executive vice president of CaroMont Health, in a statement released by CaroMount Health.

Belmont Surgery Center will enable more patients to get orthopedic and spine surgery without having to travel outside Gaston County, said Dr. H. Clayton Thomason III, a surgeon and partner at Carolina Orthopaedic & Sports Medicine Center.

“We have been committed to this for years and see this as an opportunity to continue to offer unparalleled and cutting edge orthopedic and spine care with the added convenience of same-day surgeries, improving access and convenience to everyone,” Thomason said in a statement released by CaroMont Health. “This center will allow us to offer all the patient benefits of modern ambulatory surgery centers without the hassles of multicenter systems and big city travel.”

OrthoCarolina surgeons say the Belmont Surgery Center will allow them to provide better care with more convenience to patients.

“OrthoCarolina is committed to helping our patients receive best in class care and affordable surgery options close to home. We look forward to continuing to work hand-in-hand with our patients and exceptional healthcare partners to reach outstanding outcomes at this new facility,” said Dr. Ranjan S. Maitra, an orthopedic surgeon with OrthoCarolina.

“I have served this community as a neurosurgeon for more than 23 years, I am proud to partner alongside CaroMont Regional Medical Center, Carolina Orthopaedic & Sports Medicine and OrthoCarolina with the opening of the Belmont Surgery Center,” added Dr. William Hunter, a neurosurgeon and spine specialist at Neuroscience & Spine Center of the Carolinas. “Within this partnership, I will be able to perform the newest techniques in minimally invasive spine surgery in the cervical, thoracic and lumbar spine. The Belmont Surgery Center will have the latest equipment along with an excellent specialized staff. I am excited to be a part of its inception and look forward to being part of a strong collaboration of surgeons and staff to provide state of the art care to the community.”
